Covenants - Defined

According to the Handbook of Online Learning:

  • A covenant is an agreement that has a strong psychological and cultural component and is based on a sense of equality among the parties, as opposed to a legal contract between persons of differing rank or power.”
  • Covenantal relationships are described as “bonds that fulfill deep needs and give work meaning.”
  • A covenant is “the act of coming together with a common purpose.”
  • Covenant may be written or spoken, but it can also be largely implicit, based simply on role modeling in much the way that national or ethnic or corporate cultures are transmitted.
  • Covenants are made “not so much by what we say, but by what we do” (Axtman, 1999, p. 22).
  • Covenant House is an organization committed to serving suffering children of the street, and to protect and safeguard all children. It is not what they say, but what they do!
